ANCHORAGE - Dozens of soldiers and friends gathered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Thursday to remember two men killed in battle.
Nathan Davis and Vincent Ellis were deployed to Afghanistan in December with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
?While we are losing soldiers to the war, it means we're taking it to the enemy which is good. Getting out into the unpatrolled provinces and fighting the enemy where they are. That's the way we're going to win the war,? said 1st Lieutenant Luke Friese.
Davis, 20, joined the military after high school. The California native was on his first tour of duty when an improvised explosive device killed him on June 9.
Ellis, 22, called Tokyo, Japan home. He died June 4 after being wounded by enemy fire. His comrades remember him as a hero.
?He fulfilled is obligation to his leadership and to the army by being an excellent soldier and living the warrior ethos that we seek to instill in every soldier,? said Friese, who worked with Ellis in Afghanistan.

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? A mission to a Martian moon could return with alien life, according to experts at Purdue University, but don't expect the invasion scenario presented by summer blockbusters like "Men in Black 3" or "Prometheus."
"We are talking little green microbes, not little green men," said Jay Melosh, a distinguished professor of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences and physics and aerospace engineering at Purdue. "A sample from the moon Phobos, which is much easier to reach than the Red Planet itself, would almost surely contain Martian material blasted off from large asteroid impacts. If life on Mars exists or existed within the last 10 million years, a mission to Phobos could yield our first evidence of life beyond Earth."
Melosh led a team chosen by NASA's Planetary Protection Office to evaluate if a sample from Phobos could contain enough recent material from Mars to include viable Martian organisms. The study was commissioned to prepare for the failed 2011 Russian Phobos-Grunt mission, but there is continued international interest in a Phobos mission, he said. It will likely be a recurring topic as NASA reformulates its Mars Exploration Program.
A Phobos mission was discussed at NASA's Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration workshop and a report issued June 26 stated that the Martian moons are "important destinations that may provide much of the value of human surface exploration at reduced cost and risk."
Melosh collaborated with Kathleen Howell, the Hsu Lo Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, and graduate students Loic Chappaz and Mar Vaquero on the project.
The researchers combined their expertise in impact cratering and orbital mechanics to determine how much material was displaced by particular asteroid impacts and whether individual particles would land on Phobos, the closer of the two Martian moons.
The team concluded that a 200-gram sample scooped from the surface of Phobos could contain, on average, about one-tenth of a milligram of Mars surface material launched in the past 10 million years and 50 billion individual particles from Mars. The same sample could contain as much as 50 milligrams of Mars surface material from the past 3.5 billion years.
"The time frames are important because it is thought that after 10 million years of exposure to the high levels of radiation on Phobos, any biologically active material would be destroyed," Howell said. "Of course older Martian material would still be rich with information, but there would be much less concern about bringing a viable organism back to Earth and necessary quarantine measures."
When an asteroid hits the surface of a planet it ejects a cone-shaped spray of surface material, similar to the splash created when someone does a cannonball into a swimming pool. These massive impacts pulverize the surface material and scatter high-speed fragments. The team calculated that the bulk of the fragments from such a blast on Mars would be particles about one-thousandth of a millimeter in diameter, or 100 times smaller than a grain of sand, but similar in size to terrestrial bacteria.
The team followed the possible paths the tiny particles could take as they were hurtled from the planet's surface through space, examining possible speeds, angles of departure and orbital forces. The team plotted more than 10 million trajectories and evaluated which would intercept Phobos and where they might land on the moon during its eight-hour orbit around Mars.
The probability of a particle landing on Phobos depends primarily on the power of the blast that launched it from the surface, Chappaz said.
"It is estimated that during the past 10 million years there have been at least four large impact events powerful enough to launch material into space, and we focused on several large craters as possible points of origin," he said. "It turns out that no matter where Phobos is in its orbit, it would have captured material from these powerful impact events."
After the team submitted its report, scientists identified a large, nearly 60-kilometers-in-diameter crater on Mars. The crater, named Mojave, is estimated to be less than 5 million years old, and its existence suggests that there would be an even greater amount of Martian material on Phobos that could contain viable organisms than estimated, Melosh said.
"It is not outside the realm of possibility that a sample could contain a dormant organism that might wake up when exposed to more favorable conditions on Earth," he said. "I participated in a study that found that living microbes can survive launch from impacts on rock, and other studies have shown some microscopic organisms can tolerate a lot of cosmic radiation."
This possibility has been a consideration for some time, and Michael Crichton's "The Andromeda Strain" brought it to public consciousness in 1969. However the movie scenario of a fatal contamination is unlikely, Melosh said.
"Approximately one ton of Martian material lands on Earth every year, " he said. "There is a lot more swapping back and forth of material within our solar system than people realize. In fact, we may owe our existence to life on Mars."
Howell also is optimistic that life is not unique to Earth.
"It's difficult to believe there hasn't been life somewhere out there in the vast expanse of space," Howell said. "The question is if the timeline overlaps with ours enough for us to recognize it. Even if we found no evidence of life in a sample from Phobos, it would not be a definitive answer to the question of whether or not there was life on Mars. There still may have been life that existed too long ago for us to detect it."
Melosh recently presented the team's findings at a joint NASA and European Space Agency meeting in Austria, and Chappaz will present the data at a meeting on July 14 in Mysore, India.

DreamWorks Animation has signed on Chloe Grace Moretz and is in serious talks with Jason Schwartzman to bring Good Luck Troll Dolls to animated life in "Trolls."

It?s a face-in-palm moment of cinematic scale. Last week, Dreamworks announced that they?ve offered Jason Schwartzman the lead voice role in ?Trolls,? their?next major animation project, based on the frizzy-haired Good Luck Troll dolls. Fortunately, Deadline confirms that??Hugo?s? talented Chlo? Grace Moretz is set as the female lead, but the devastating news lies in the fact that the film, about tiny plastic dolls popular in the 1960s and again in the '90s, is even being made at all.
While the ?Transformers? series has been hyper-successful, grossing over $2.5 billion worldwide, its toy- and game-to-movie model doesn?t always fare well. ?Battleship? pulled in scathing reviews and less than a million-dollar profit, according to Box Office Mojo. Yet, this certainly hasn?t stopped major studios from being drawn to the audience recognition and simplicity offered by brand name toys and board games.
Universal's "Battleship," based on the classic Hasbro game, saw dismal reviews and meager box office return.
Universal once had a six-year partnership?with Hasbro to produce films based on their toys and games, which include ?Monopoly,? ?Candy Land,? ?Clue,? ?Ouija,? ?Magic: The Gathering,? and ?Stretch Armstrong.? While they?ve since paid to get out of much of this agreement,?Relativity Media?has said it would be making ?Stretch Armstrong? and Columbia Pictures has picked up ?Candy Land.? Universal stayed in the game too, signing on screenwriters and producers for a film based on?Atari?s late-70s video game, ?Asteroids.?

'Candy Land'
Adam Sandler is in final talks with Sony and Hasbro to star in the movie version of this board game of pure luck and sweet characters, reports Reuters.?Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad called "Candy Land," which was created in 1949 and stars a variety of sugary?characters such as Princess Frostine, Mr. Mint and King Candy, more than a mere game, saying??it is a brand that children, parents and grandparents know and love.? As such, Belgrad said, it offers a "larger than life?part" for Sandler.?While "Enchanted" director Kevin Lima is signed on and the script seems to be steadily moving forward, the 2013 release date is still tentative. We truly hope it will be made, as it will,?at the very least, be a much?appreciated?break from the usual, "That's My Boy"-type fare for Sandler.?
'Stretch Armstrong'
It was a shame to see ?Twilight?s? Taylor Lautner?bail on?the lead role as a gel-infused action figure for Relativity and Hasbro?s ?Stretch Armstrong.? But with screenwriter Dean Georgaris hired, a provisional release date of April 11, 2014, and a lucrative merchandising deal set, this film (and plenty of Stretch Armstrong toys) looks to be an odd but enjoyable?throwback that'll show "Fantastic Four's" Mr. Fantastic how superhuman limb contortion is really done.
'Asteroids'
Roland Emmerich, the director of end-times fantasies "2012," "The Day After Tomorrow" and Independence Day," is being courted by Universal Pictures to direct this movie based on a popular 1979 arcade game. The game, in which players shoot a series of white dots through a black background to stave off alien attacks, created a four-party bidding war for its rights in 2009. With so little to go off of, a lot of flexibility and creativity will be required to mine this source material for film ideas. Vulture reports that it will be set after human civilization has been destroyed and only a few colonies of humans have survived. While that's certainly vague, it?sure?sounds better than "Battleship." And does he have to rely on other people for that judgment?" Drexler said, without waiting for an answer. "No.
"The guy has an unbelievable resume, he's the most unselfish, hard-working guy on the court and if you're a fan of the game, you can't help but love the way the guy plays the game. So here's one way to look at it. Before 'The Decision,' he was one of the most revered athletes' on the planet. After 'The Decision' ? and it wasn't the best way he could have handled that situation, but it's over ? people just, just sort of threw him down the stairs.
"I know what Michael (Jordan) said about playing against your rivals instead of with them. But when I got to Houston and started playing with Hakeem, frankly, I needed a lighter load. I knew I wouldn't have to work as hard.
"With LeBron, the expectations were outsized once he said he was going to Miami," Drexler said finally. "He met those once. We'll find out how much he's got left."
The funny thing about success for guys that good is that it cranks up expectations instead of easing them. What marked Jordan as special is that every offseason, after the cigars were extinguished, the champagne ran out and the trophy was passed around, he went back to work turning a weakness ? left-handed dribble, mid-range jump shots, developing a fadeaway to avoid blocked shots ? into a strength.
It's that trait that Magic thinks will ultimately decide how far James continues climbing the ranks. Noting James was already a deadly scorer, a top-shelf passer and as tough a rebounder as he needed to be, Johnson said his improved post-up game ? following extensive offseason training with Olajuwon ? had already established James as "the most unstoppable force we have in the NBA."
"Before, my biggest knock on LeBron was he was just playing off his God-gifted talent," Johnson said during a conference call before Game 5. "He was just the best athlete. But he didn't play with his head to match that. Now he's playing with his talent and with his head, and wow, watch out. This guy is going to set the league on fire for a long time. ... I know there was an earlier question about how dominant has his performance been. We look to see this from LeBron for years and years to come."

Dixons Retail is to cut or consolidate over 100 stores as part of an ongoing transformation plan, according to the company.
The number of Dixons UK stores, which include Currys and PC World, is to be reduced from 557 in the UK to between 400 and 420, the company said on Friday. There is no timeline for the cuts, which will be implemented on a case-by-case basis as leases come up for renewal on premises.
The closures will result in a number of jobs being lost, although exact redundancy figures were not available at the time of writing. A large proportion of the stores will become 'two-in-one' combined Currys and PC World outlets.
The cuts will be made as part of the company's ongoing 'Renewal & Transformation' plan, which has seen 50 Dixons stores closed over the past year. Dixons Retail chief executive Sebastian James said the group will "continue to plan cautiously and manage costs aggressively" over the coming year.
"Against a tough economic backdrop, we have continued to deliver on a clear plan to transform the business," he added.
Dixons Retail released its full year results on Thursday. The company's earnings before interest and taxes were down year-on-year at ?115m, compared with ?128m in 2010/11.

Aroy Dee Thai Cafe is located at the first level of Sunshine Plaza facing NAFA. Ever since I tried the Tom Yum over here, I have been back several times. Over the few visits, I have noticed that?Aroy Dee Thai Cafe is always very crowded during lunch time.
Thai people are very patriotic.?Thai Royal family Portrait are proudly displayed in most eateries, restaurants and shops in Thailand. Recently, I have noticed that most Thai restaurants in Singapore are displaying the Royal Family Portrait too.
If you are there during lunch, they have the Set Lunch Menu?(rice/noodle) that includes a main course and a drink (Lime/Guava/Mango/Freshly Brew Lemon Grass/Roselle Flower) for just $5.50.
I ordered the Set Lunch 'Tom Yum Chicken with Steam Rice' and my choice of drink was lime.
The Tom Yum (Tom Yam) Chicken was delicious! It was not oil and did not look spicy (not fiery red or orangey in colour). But well, appearances are deceiving... it was?very?spicy. Still it was so addictive ?that I finish everything! In addition, they were generous with the ingredients (button mushrooms, chicken chunks and tomato). The chicken chunks were tender and soft! A must order! Shiok!
