Sporting an almost laughable 5.3" screen, the gigantic 4G LTE phone could easily be mistaken for a tablet, and even Samsung's own marketing suggests it's meant to occupy both spaces. Its display is 51% bigger than the iPhone's, making it a challenge to hold for those with modestly-sized mitts.

The Note's split personality has also seemingly split the gadget community over how big is too big when it comes to a phone. Some of those who have laid their hands on it, including?Tecca's own Taylor Hatmaker, are delighted with with the new tablet phone hybrid. In Hatmaker's own words: "The heavily marketed new member of the ever-growing Galaxy family is a 5.3" experiment in cross-breeding a phone and a tablet, and I for one really enjoyed the result."

Is the Note more to love, or just too big?And she's not alone. Engadget's Tim Stevens?boasts "It's a device with a lot to love and is the kind of phone that would make almost every Android aficionado swoon."

But not everyone is on board with the trend toward massive handsets.?Slate's Farhad Manjoo suggests that smaller is better, noting "A larger phone is more trouble to carry around than a small one, it's harder to hold and use with one hand, it usually gets worse battery life, and when you put it up to your ear, you're liable to get swept up by a strong gust."

Jonathan Geller of?Boy Genius Report goes a step further, calling the Galaxy Note the "most useless phone" he's ever used, adding, "The phone is too big. You will look stupid talking on it, people will laugh at you, and you'll be unhappy if you buy it. I really can't get around this, unfortunately, because Samsung pushed things way too far this time."

It seems there isn't much middle ground on this issue; either the Galaxy Note will change your life for the better, or you'll regret ever considering purchasing a phone larger than a slice of pizza. A recent flap over a social network's app that surreptitiously siphoned contact information from iPhone users' Address Books has exposed a much deeper, wider flaw in iOS that allows other apps to pilfer that information onto their own servers, without needing any permissions.

While outrage over the social network, Path, remains fresh?? even resulting in a letter from congressional representatives to Apple demanding an explanation for how and why it happened?? it's the concern for the vulnerability and its potential for more invasions of privacy that has the industry abuzz.

The Address Book seems to be imbued with a flaw that allows apps to be data vampires and suck emails and phone numbers directly from a user's contact information into their corporate servers.?

Gizmodo states, "Some app developers ? like Path did ? are taking advantage of this weakness. The fact is that, at this point,?any?app can access your address book and steal all your contacts. Just like that. We don't know which apps may be doing this right now. That is a scary thought and Apple should have thought about it."

And over at The Next Web, a very comprehensive report shows the results of tests that reveal the inherent weakness of the Address Book. At least one well-known app, Foursquare, sent personal data without any kind of warning. But now, it joins other apps, such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter that give warnings before the information fleecing.?

While it may be easy to jump to the conclusion that the information gathering is for nefarious means, the Next Web has another, rational perspective:

The important point here is that developers do not?have?to upload plain text data to their servers in order to offer these convenience features. They can upload hashed, and therefore anonymous, data instead. Then they can use that data to provide the features without ever having seen or stored the plain information.

The answer is likely not that these developers are evil or looking to harvest your data. Instead, it?s likely to be a simple matter of them not understanding that there are better ways to go about it. Developers are only human and many teams have a limited amount of resources.

UPDATE: Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr issued this statement about how apps will need to conform to its permissions guidelines:

?Apps that collect or transmit a user?s contact data without their prior permission are in violation of our guidelines.?We?re working to make this even better for our customers, and as we have done with location services, any app wishing to access contact data will require explicit user approval in a future software release.?

EU asks India to pressure Iran over nuclear program: report (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? The European Union will ask for India's help in convincing Iran to abandon its nuclear program and return to the negotiating table, EU President Herman Van Rompuy said in a newspaper interview published on Thursday.

"I plan to ask Indian leaders to apply their considerable leverage to Iran and help in convincing the Iranian leadership to give up their sensitive nuclear program and return to the negotiating table," Van Rompuy told the Times of India.

The United States and the European Union have tightened sanctions against Iran this year, hoping to choke its oil revenues and persuade it to abandon a suspected nuclear weapons program.

Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful means.

India imports 12 percent of its oil from the Islamic Republic and could be badly hit by the latest sanctions. The United States and its allies in Europe are putting pressure on New Delhi to look for alternative sources of oil.

New Delhi has, thus far, defied the mounting pressure from Washington and Brussels and is seeking alternative ways of paying for Iran's oil without violating the sanctions.

New Delhi will send a delegation to Tehran this month to explore increasing India's exports to Iran and for making payments for oil imports in Indian rupees. Iran has agreed to accept rupees for 45 percent of New Delhi's $11 billion a year oil bill, sources told Reuters early this month.

India is currently paying Iran for the oil through Turkey's Halkbank after a previous mechanism was closed 13 months ago, but fears that route may also succumb to international pressure.

CVS Caremark 4Q profit rises, 2012 outlook climbs (AP)

Drugstore chain Walgreen's loss of a big client is turning into rival CVS Caremark's gain so far this year.

A contract squabble between Walgreen Co. and pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts Inc. has driven more customers to CVS pharmacies, prompting that company to raise its 2012 earnings forecast by 3 cents per share.

CVS Caremark Corp. said in December it would gain business because of the dispute, but CEO Larry Merlo told analysts Wednesday the company is seeing more prescription transfers than it expected. He said CVS Caremark's chances of retaining those customers improve the longer the impasse continues, especially once people refill their prescriptions a few times and get to know the pharmacist and store staff.

"As I have said in the past, we know that that pharmacy customer is the hardest person to lose, but once you lose them, it's the hardest person to get back," he said.

Walgreen stopped filling prescriptions for Express Scripts at the end of 2011, when a contract between the two companies ran out and they were unable to negotiate a new one. Pharmacy benefits managers, or PBMs, run prescription drug plans and use large purchasing power to negotiate lower drug prices. They make their money by reducing costs for health plan sponsors and members.

Walgreen said Friday that January revenue from stores open at least a year fell 4.6 percent, as the Express Scripts split and a weak flu season hurt business.

CVS Caremark, based in Woonsocket, R.I., runs the second-largest chain of drugstores in the U.S., after Walgreen, and its Caremark unit is one of the largest PBMs.

Overall, CVS Caremark's earnings from the fourth quarter of 2011 climbed nearly 4 percent. The company earned $1.06 billion, or 81 cents per share, in the three months that ended Dec. 31. That compares with $1.03 billion, or 75 cents per share, in the final quarter of 2010.

Adjusted earnings were 89 cents per share, in line with the average analyst forecast, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 15 percent to $28.32 billion, above the $28.09 billion analysts expected.

Revenue from the company's PBM side jumped 32 percent to $15.9 billion in the quarter because of the addition of a long-term contract with health insurer Aetna Inc. and new sales that came from the acquisition of insurer Universal American Corp.'s Medicare prescription drug business.

Drugstore revenue increased 4 percent, as pharmacy revenue at stores open at least a year climbed 3.6 percent. Revenue at stores open at least a year is a key indicator of a retailer's health, because it excludes the impact of recently opened or closed stores.

Non-pharmacy, or front-of-the-store, sales rose only slightly. CVS said Christmas sales came in lower than it had planned, and a weak flu season also affected those results.

For the full year, the company earned $3.46 billion, or $2.59 per share, on $107.1 billion in revenue.

It now forecasts 2012 adjusted earnings of $3.18 to $3.28 per share. The company said this new forecast doesn't reflect a benefit from the Walgreen-Express Scripts dispute beyond the first quarter.

Analysts expect, on average, earnings of $3.26 per share.

BMO Capital Markets analyst Dave Shove noted that CVS Caremark's retail pharmacies gained market share in the fourth quarter. He said in a research note he suspects the Walgreen-Express Scripts dispute will help carry that momentum into the first half of 2012.

CVS Caremark opened 24 drugstores in the fourth quarter and closed one. It operated 7,327 as of Dec. 31.

Company shares climbed 61 cents to $43.69 in afternoon trading Wednesday, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell slightly.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Kevin Love's frustration with physical play and officiating have been apparent early and often this season.

Emotion got the best of him on Saturday night against the Rockets, and now he and the Minnesota Timberwolves have to pay the price: Love, his team's leading scorer and rebounder, was suspended for two games by the NBA for "driving his foot into the upper body and face of the Rockets' Luis Scola as Scola was lying on the floor."

The play happened in the third quarter of Saturday's victory over the Rockets after the two tangled while going for a rebound. As Love went to step over Scola, who a week earlier had thrown a ball off Love's groin while trying to save it from going out of bounds, he looked down at the Rockets forward and stepped on him as he headed back up the court.

It marked the second time last week Love delivered a hard foul after not getting a call on the other end. He raked Pacers forward Danny Granger across the chest on Wednesday, touching off a small skirmish in a loss to Indiana.

Love apologized to Scola both after the game and in a statement issued by the team on Monday following the suspension, and said he has to do a better job handling his emotions.

"I don't want to be known for that," Love said after practice. "I want to be known as a stand-up guy who happened to make a mistake with a size 19 shoe and just move on. So everybody knows there were no ill intentions there."

He will miss Tuesday's game against Sacramento and Wednesday's game at Memphis as the Timberwolves (12-12) look to climb above .500 for the first time this season.

Love is averaging 25.0 points and 13.7 rebounds per game and leads the NBA with 39.4 minutes per game. The All-Star forward was contrite on Monday, saying he thought the suspension from NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson "was warranted."

"It's been a chippy year," Love said. "It's not only us. It's not only the Pacers, the Rockets or anything like that. It's a lot of games. The guys are tired. Games are being drawn out and guys are worn down.

"For me and for us, it's no different. And also for the refs as well. They've got to go over film just like we do, maybe even more. So you've got to respect them and got to respect what they do."

Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said he has spoken with Love and the rest of his young team about playing through any perceived mistreatment from the other team or the officials.

Adelman did wonder how Jackson landed on two games as proper punishment.

"Do I think it's fair? No. Absolutely (not)," Adelman said. "I don't know the reasoning. They don't tell you the reasoning. I don't know the reasoning why two games. They haven't said anything. You've just got to move on."

The 23-year-old Love, who recently signed a four-year extension worth more than $60 million, has been barking at the officials most of the season.

Adelman said he saw Love get upset with no-calls on two straight possessions before the run-in with Scola "and it led to the incident."

"You've got to play through," Adelman said. "Play with emotion, but you've got to play through it and not let it affect what happens on the court."

Adelman didn't say who would start in Love's place against the Kings, but Derrick Williams and Anthony Tolliver figure to see a lot more time. Williams, the No. 2 overall pick, has had a tough time getting settled into a role with the Wolves.

He has played just 37 minutes combined in the last four games and tweeted on Saturday "anybody ever felt like a caged lion?"

"I guess it's just patience and hopefully I pick up (Adelman's) trust and have the ball in my hands more often," Williams said. "I kind of feel like it's just a lack of confidence, not in myself, but him in me being in that position. I've just got to earn his trust."

Separately, the Timberwolves sent rookie G Malcolm Lee to Sioux Falls of the NBDL for what essentially is a rehab assignment. The second-round pick has not played this year after having surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee.

There isn?t anything shocking left for Courtney Love to do anymore. Except maybe kill her daughter?s pets.

In a sworn deposition in support of a restraining order against her mother, Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Love and the late Kurt Cobain, says:??[Love] has taken drugs for as long as I can remember. She basically exists now on ? Xanax, Adderall, Sonata and Abilify, sugar and cigarettes.?

Love?s diet is far from shocking.

But the deposition, obtained by The Fix, also says that Love killed Frances? cat by suffocating it in a pile of fabric, paperwork, trash and other junk. Her dog died by eating some medley of Love?s pills.

Frances made a strong case for the restraining order by saying: ?She often falls asleep in her bed while she is smoking, and I am constantly worried that she will start a fire (which she has done at least three times) that will threaten our lives.?

The deposition also says that Love drove her daughter to a boyfriend?s home in the middle of the night, threatened to burn it down and threatened to jump off a balcony in front of her.

Frances sought the restraining order that prevented Love from contacting Frances, Frances? grandmother and aunt, and most importantly, her dog, Uncle Fester.

Report: Complaints about teacher made years ago (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? School officials questioned how an elementary school teacher suspected of taking bizarre bondage-style photographs of children in his class went undetected for years as new allegations of past and potentially inappropriate behavior by Mark Berndt surfaced.

Berndt remained jailed on $23 million bail after his first court appearance Wednesday on felony charges that he committed lewd acts on 23 boys and girls, ages 6 to 10, between 2005 and 2010. The alleged acts occurred at Miramonte Elementary School where he taught for more than 30 years. He could face multiple life sentences if convicted.

Angry parents confronted school officials Wednesday, demanding to know why they weren't told for a year that Berndt was suspected of photographing children in class for sexual thrills.

Berndt was removed from classwork in January 2011 and fired within the month, but only parents of children identified as victims were told by authorities at that time of the investigation.

School officials and investigators said proper procedures were followed to prevent anything that might harm efforts to investigate and build a case against the teacher.

"That's cool and fine but the detectives' children don't go here," said Cheremoya Dupree, 38, whose two children attend the school and were not victims. "I want them to tell the truth ... because I don't think we got that."

Miramonte Principal Martin Sandoval told reporters that he followed proper district procedure.

Meanwhile, two women who said they were former students of Berndt told the Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/yo4M8P) Wednesday that complaints were made about Berndt's odd behavior as far back as 1990.

Marlene Trujillo, 30, said she and two other fourth-grade classmates spoke with a school counselor about Berndt. They told the counselor he often moved his hands under his desk, near his lap, at the front of the classroom. She and other students also had seen a jar of Vaseline in one of his desk compartments.

Trujillo said the counselor "just told us it's not very good to make stories up. She said it was our imagination. It was never talked about again."

Trujillo's classmate, Nadine Martinez Rodriguez, said she also noticed Berndt's behavior. Martinez said she told her mother about it at the time but that her mother didn't take it seriously enough to report to school officials, the Times reported.

School officials tried to determine how the alleged behavior went on unsuspected for so long.

"How do I make sense out of the fact that this took place over a number of years and no one seemed to know about that?" Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. John Deasy told the Times. "I'm definitely trying to understand how someone could not have known."

Using a cheap camera, Berndt is suspected of snapping nearly 400 photographs of Miramonte students, some with a giant Madagascar cockroach from a classroom terrarium on their faces.

Others were blindfolded or had clear tape over their mouths, and some were shown with a spoonful of milky liquid placed near their lips, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Scott said.

The photo sessions were treated as a game and some children were given sperm-laced cookies to eat as treats, Scott said. Berndt didn't sell or share the photographs but did give copies to some children, Scott said.

"It was like a souvenir," Scott said.

Some children were smiling, and there was one photograph of Berndt tied up but with a "nonchalant" expression, Scott said.

The investigation began in the fall of 2010 when a film processor became suspicious about the photographs and turned them over to Redondo Beach police, who on Dec. 2, 2010, handed them over to the Sheriff's Department, Scott said.

Investigators began trying to track down the children, but learned the year-round school was on break until Jan. 3, 2011, Scott said.

On that day, investigators went to the class, where Berndt refused to be questioned without an attorney, Scott said.

An investigator then found a blue spoon apparently hidden in a trash can that appeared to be the one seen in the photographs, but it took months before analysis determined there was semen on the spoon and more time before DNA testing matched it to Berndt, authorities said.

Only then was there enough evidence of a crime to charge Berndt, Scott said.

Meanwhile, investigators kept trying to identify children in the photographs, some of which apparently dated back to 2005.

"Up until two weeks ago, we were still working to identify children," Scott said.

Old First: January 29, Epiphany 4; Passionate Spirituality 4: Unclean ...

Deuteronomy 18:15-20, Psalm 111, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Mark 1:21-28

This casting out the unclean spirit is the very first miracle of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark. And it?s easy to get it exactly wrong. The main point of the story is not the miracle but rather the authority of Jesus? teaching. The miracle is an illustration of the power of the teaching, it illustrates that what Jesus teaches has the power to cleanse what is unclean and to liberate those who are in bondage. The story is a liberation story, and it?s the teaching that liberates.

It?s easy to get this story wrong. It?s a mistake to assume the man in the unclean spirit was rabid or looked abnormal. I suspect the unclean spirit was not apparent to his compatriots. I mean the guy might have been unlikable, or maybe known for being contentious, or even one of those guys who might give you the creeps, but it was not with some demonic voice that he challenged Jesus. He regarded himself as reasonable. ?Jesus, I see who you are, and I see where you?re going here, and you?re going to mess everything up and get the Romans mad and put us all in danger. You cannot win. It isn?t worth it. So leave us alone.? He thinks he?s making sense.

The man has an ?unclean? spirit. The choice of words is important. Mark does not call it an ?evil? spirit. If the spirit is evil effectively it is not so essentially. It is not a demon from hell. The Gospel of Mark is not a medieval document. We mistake the event to classify it as supernatural. Yes, it is beyond our rational analysis, but that only speaks to the limits of our mental capacity. The gospel regards the ordinary world as naturally spiritual. This unclean spirit belongs to the natural spirituality of the world. But the world has been disordered by human sin, and so the natural spirituality of the world has been corrupted, confused, out of place, and it infected him. Where it came from we are not told, nor where it went when Jesus cast it out. All we know is that it was no longer making the man unclean.

When the spaghetti sauce is in my plate it?s clean. But it?s unclean when it?s on my nice white shirt. The Brussel sprouts are lovely in their butter on the plate. But then you look away, and your little son who hates to eat them puts them in the pocket of his Sunday pants. Next Sunday morning when he puts them on again he will discover that his pants smell bad. And there?s not much he can do about it. He?ll have to surrender his pants to you to clean them. But he will feel guilty, and he may resist you helping him. He is resisting your authority, the very authority you need to use to help him out of his predicament. How often do we not resist our liberation.

Jesus is teaching with great authority. Who does he think he is to teach this way. He cites no standard reference books, he appeals to no other authority but his own. It?s as if he thinks he?s allowed to speak for God. This is both appealing and threatening, and the unclean spirit has the sensitivity to sense the threat of liberation and the threat of the authority of God. He calls him ?the holy one of God.? He does not mean by this that he senses that Jesus is divine, though ?Christians are quick to jump to that interpretation. At this point in the gospel it?s no more than that the ?recognizes him as God?s anointed, as both a liberator and a threat, like King David.

Or like Joshua, the Old Testament general from whom Jesus gets his name. Joshua led the armies of Israel into the Galilee to liberate the land from bondage to the hideous idolatry of the Canaanites. That was unclean spirituality, and unhealthy too. I?m sure most of the Canaanites were decent people, just trying to live their lives, but they were in bondage. They had made gods and goddesses of the natural forces of the world, the forces of weather and fertility and sex. They feared those forces and they worshiped them and made themselves subservient to them, even to the sacrifice of their own children. Joshua cleared this all out and purged the corruption and cleansed the unclean spirituality. What Joshua accomplished must have looked like a reduction in spirituality, but now there was freedom for simple obedience to the life-giving laws of God. And so too the man in the synagogue was now liberated from the unclean spirit in order to be free to learn and live the teaching of Jesus.?Joshua used the sword, and Jesus uses his teaching.

The teaching of Jesus appeals to your mind, to your understanding, to your proper use of reason, to learning and the love of learning. Don?t regard this story as anti-intellectual. The story implies the cultivation of a Christian intellect. You are called to learn the teaching of Jesus in all its richness and complexity. Your Christian intellectual pursuit is for you to receive God?s mission in the world and for you also to share in God? mission in the world, for the saving of the world and the healing of the world.

Because the gospel story deals in spirituality, we tend to read it in terms of the supernatural. The bias of the modern mind is that the spiritual is somehow supernatural and therefore other than rational and intellectual and therefore contrary to it. The modern bias is that spirituality is anti-rational and often anti-intellectual. Many people are being drawn back to spirituality because of their frustration with the emptiness of modern rationality and the narrowness of the secular intellect. But the teaching of Jesus can answer this frustration and heal this fragmentation, because it offers a spirituality which is not an escape from reason, and a mysticism which is not anti-intellectual. The liberation in the teaching of Jesus is not an escape but a setting us free by setting things to right and bringing things back together and bringing rightful order to the world. The spirituality of Jesus is very much for your understanding and your reason and your mind. So the way to get at this wholesome and healing spirituality is by the open-hearted learning of his teaching.

His teaching attracts us and yet we resist it. We would rather help ourselves and liberate ourselves, but there are some powers and forces in the lives of each of us which no amount of learning or education or self-improvement or self-help can free us from. We are in their grip, and they are spiritual. We modern people don?t like to hear this, especially with our secular and scientific loyalties, but that?s part of what Jesus is teaching us. These spiritual powers can be economic or political, they can have the public form of ideology, or they can be collectively psychological, like the depression of an urban ghetto. Like certain neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Like that part of Baltimore in the TV show The Wire. In the fourth season one of those schoolboys says, ?I know there is another world out there, but I don?t know how to get there.? Or the power can be like the power of addiction, which AA knows is spiritual. And we are powerless to get ourselves free.

But you don?t have to look for special miracles. The teaching of Jesus has that power. We can trust the power of his teaching. So if we let this story direct us in our Christian action in the world, it means that we can count on God using the teaching of Jesus to liberate and cleanse and put right those things in our lives which are disordered and disabling. The story directs us to rely on Jesus? teaching for God to do the necessary miracles.

Everyone of us here is more or less unclean. For some of you it?s bad enough to be disabling. For some of you its from your early suffering. For some of you it?s from compromises that you feel you?ve made to get through life or to get something of seeming value in return. For some of you it?s your appetites, or your fears, or vows that you have made, commitments in your mind, conclusions you have drawn, or substitute freedoms that you treasure and you want to protect. And often we don?t know that we?re in the power of spirits more powerful than us until we are made uncomfortable by the very teaching of Jesus which we first welcomed. But still you want to welcome it, and that?s why you are here.

The teaching of Jesus is enough to give you get you clean and make you free. Not that it?s a magic pill. It?s teaching. It takes learning and reflection and it is best done by learning it in a group. This story takes place within the community of a synagogue. Nobody likes to be challenged in a group or healed in a group, but the teaching of Jesus is always in the context of community. ?Because the goal of the teaching is love. You want to be clean for your neighbor. And you want to be clean for God. Which is a little threatening, but also compelling, because even when you are unclean, God loves you.
