The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens near Sanford will open its North American River Otter exhibit Saturday with a male and a female otter, waterfall and pond.

Zoo visitors will be able to watch the playful animals swim underwater. The female, named Molly, was acquired from the Brookgreen Gardens Zoo in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The male, Buster, came from Flamingo Gardens in Davie.

Bernanke throws spotlight on labor market woes

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday said the U.S. economy faced "daunting" challenges and that progress reducing unemployment had been too slow, but he stopped short of providing a clear signal of further monetary policy easing.

Bernanke said the central bank would act as needed to strengthen the recovery but he also said it had to weigh the costs as well as the benefits of more monetary stimulus, although he hinted the costs may be worthwhile.

"As we assess the benefits and costs of alternative policy approaches ... we must not lose sight of the daunting economic challenges that confront our nation," Bernanke said at the Kansas City Fed's annual Jackson Hole symposium.

"Taking due account of the uncertainties and limits of its policy tools, the Federal Reserve will provide additional policy accommodation as needed to promote a stronger economic recovery and sustained improvement in labor market conditions in a context of price stability."

That was a somewhat weaker hint of policy easing than the minutes of the Fed's last policy meeting had delivered, but it was enough to keep alive hopes in financial markets that the U.S. central bank would soon launch another round of bond purchases to push borrowing costs lower.

The lack of a clear signal of policy action led markets to see-saw in the wake of Bernanke's comments, but in the end his emphasis on the travails of the struggling U.S. labor market helped U.S. stocks extend gains. Yields on U.S. government bonds dropped and the U.S. dollar declined against the euro.

"The stagnation of the labor market in particular is a grave concern not only because of the enormous suffering and waste of human talent it entails, but also because persistently high levels of unemployment will wreak structural damage on our economy that could last for many years," Bernanke said.

In response to the financial crisis and recession of 2007-2009, the Fed cut overnight interest rates to near zero and bought $2.3 trillion in government and mortgage securities in two separate rounds of so-called quantitative easing.

It next meets on September 12-13, and policymakers have been locked in debate over whether further bond purchases are warranted to spur a stronger recovery.

Economists said Bernanke's emphasis on the health of the job market throws an especially strong spotlight on a report due on September 7 on job growth in August. Hiring picked up in July but the jobless rate moved up to 8.3 percent.

"Bernanke fell short of providing any explicit green light to further asset purchases at the September meeting, but his remarks reinforce the dovish bias arising from the minutes of the July meeting," said Millan Mulraine, an economist at TD Securities in New York.

"The burden of proof remains squarely on the data ... to dissuade the Fed from taking further action," Mulraine said.

DOWNPLAYS RISKS OF UNCONVENTIONAL POLICIES

The Fed's aggressive efforts to prop up the economy have drawn criticism from Republican politicians for potentially sowing the seeds for inflation and asset bubbles.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has said he does not think a third round of quantitative easing, or QE3 in market parlance, would help the economy, and some analysts think the central bank may be hesitant to act ahead of the November 6 presidential election. After September, the Fed has one more policy meeting in late October before Americans go to the polls.

Bernanke, however, downplayed the potential risks from the Fed's unconventional policies and argued that the asset purchases had been quite effective at boosting economic growth.

"The costs of nontraditional policies, when considered carefully, appear manageable, implying that we should not rule out the further use of such policies if economic conditions warrant," he said.

The economy emerged from recession nearly three years ago, but growth has remained tepid. U.S. gross domestic product grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the second quarter, too weak to bring down the nation's elevated unemployment rate of 8.3 pct.

"Unless the economy begins to grow more quickly than it has recently, the unemployment rate is likely to remain far above levels consistent with maximum sustainable employment," Bernanke said. The Fed is charged with pursuing both price stability and full employment.

Economic data has improved since the Fed's July 31-August 1 meeting, which came before a stronger-than-expected reading for July employment. Reports on retail sales, exports and housing have also been relatively solid.

A report on Friday showed U.S. consumer sentiment hit a three-month high in August, although pessimism on the future remained.

The economy's generally better tone has led some market participants to dial back their expectations of a fresh round of Fed bond purchases in September, with analysts closely divided over the prospects for action.

As an alternative, many economists say, the Fed may simply push further into the future the date it thinks it will finally start to move interest rates higher. The central bank has said since January that it expects to keep rates near zero at least through late 2014.

Romney camp tries to lower expectations for convention "bump"

ABOARD MITT ROMNEY'S CAMPAIGN PLANE (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's campaign tried on Tuesday to play down talk that he will receive the kind of significant bump in the polls that candidates traditionally enjoy after their party convention.

"I just think all bets are off about any kind of past performance being a predictor of the future," senior adviser Stuart Stevens told reporters on Romney's campaign plane headed for Tampa, Florida.

He cited the threat to the convention from bad weather, the late date in the campaign season in which conventions are now held and the fact that the Republicans' and Democrats' gatherings are being held back-to-back.

Romney dropped into the Republican event in Tampa to watch his wife Ann make a speech on Tuesday night. He will return on Thursday to make his closely watched acceptance speech and kick off the final stretch of his campaign to defeat President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

The two men are running very close in opinion polls.

"I think it's extraordinary we're going to the convention tied or with the lead," Stevens said. "I think if the election were held tomorrow, we'd win and win pretty easily."

The Romney campaign is aiming to present a more human side of its candidate in convention speeches to contrast with the Obama team's negative portrayal of Romney as an out-of-touch rich man.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Monday showed that Romney has work to do.

Obama far outstripped Romney on who is more eloquent by 51 percent to 21 percent. Obama also gets higher likability numbers, by 54 percent to 26 percent. But in bad news for Obama, three-quarters of Americans said the economy is on the wrong track.

Stevens said the momentum favors Romney because Obama has focused his efforts on attacking the Republican and not defending his record of the last three-and-a-half years.

"They've talked about everything but that, and that's why all of this effort they've had hasn't worked," Stevens said. "And they spent all this money and they've talked about all this stuff, and it just doesn't matter."

The Democratic convention where Obama will be officially nominated to seek re-election is scheduled for next week in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Libya assembly suspends 3 members for alleged Gaddafi links

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya's newly elected national assembly on Wednesday suspended three members for having links with former leader Muammar Gaddafi's government, a spokesman said.

Omar al-Hassabi, spokesman for the assembly's High Organisation for Transparency and Nationalism, said the suspensions had followed an investigation into the three.

"We discovered the three representatives were either members of the Gaddafi Revolutionary Guards or involved in criminal anti-revolutionary activities," Hassabi told Reuters.

"For this reason, we advised the National Congress which suspended their membership on Wednesday morning."

In July, Libyans elected the 200-member national assembly which is charged with overseeing the writing of the country's constitution. The elections followed the ousting of Gaddafi in a popular revolt last year.

The three suspended members are Anfish Abdel Moneim representing Tarhouna, Salma Akheil of Zlitan and Ibrahim Adah of Obari. They could not be immediately reached for comment.

Hassabi said they would have 10 days to appeal the decision in court.

The High Organisation for Transparency and Nationalism is tasked with investigating the backgrounds of citizens wishing to run for office.

Transportation and equipment will be provided. Ages 12 and up are invited to participate and the cost is $35.00 per person. Please bring appropriate clothing, water, snacks, and a packed lunch. This trip is geared towards beginners so all are welcome!? Preregistration is required by 4:00pm on September 6th.

Women in the Wilderness

Women in the Wilderness is a program designed for women to enjoy outdoor sports and learn new skills as well as meet like-minded women who want to live a healthy, outdoor lifestyle.? On September 11th, Outdoor Rec will be offering an Introduction to Archery session for their Women in the Wilderness Program. The cost is $10.00 and it will run from 5:00pm until 8:00pm.

Take the Family for some fun on September 15th as Outdoor Recreation holds a Duck River Family Canoe Trip. Ages 6 and up may participate and the cost is $25.00 per person. You?ll leave at 8:00am and return at 6:00pm. Transportation and equipment will be be provided.

The Duck River is the largest self contained river in the state of Tennessee. It stretches over 250 miles before running into the Tennessee River. The river passes through some of Tennessee?s most scenic pastoral lands as well as beautiful rock bluffs, caves, bottomland forests and the Yanahli Wilderness Area.

The breathtaking scenery and Family friendly waters makes this a perfect location for a Family float trip.? This 5.5 mile stretch of water will give participants the opportunity to enjoy the river and the picturesque views while paddling canoes.

Preregistration is required by 4:00pm on September 13th.

Chickasaw Trace Mountain Biking

On September 16th, you can join Outdoor Recreation for a Chickasaw Trace Mountain Biking trip.? This trip is scheduled to last from 8:00am until 4:00pm. Ages 14 and up are invited to participate. The cost is $19.00 per person with transportation, helmets and bikes provided.

Chickasaw Trace is a small 300 acre park, bordering the Duck River just southwest of Nashville. It may be small but this park offers some of the best mountain biking in Middle Tennessee. It has something to offer cyclists of all levels of experience.? Don?t forget to bring food, water, and closed toe shoes.

Preregistration is required by 4:00pm on September 14th.

Hiking

Spend your day hiking and playing on this rock garden playground. Ages 8 and up may take a Garden of the Gods Day Hike with Outdoor Recreation on September 22nd from 8:00am until 5:00pm.? The cost is $19.00 per person.

Located in Southern Illinois? Shawnee National Forest, Garden of the Gods recreation area is a spectacular hiking destination. You will be hiking the Indian Point Trail and the Observation Trail. Don?t forget your hiking boots and camera!

Ocoee Rafting Trip

Outdoor Recreation Adventure Program will be taking a group for Ocoee Rafting on September 29 from 6:00am until 10:00pm. The cost is $85.00 per person and you must be at least 14 years of age to participate.

Located in Southeastern Tennessee, the Ocoee River is one of the gems in the whitewater industry. You will paddle a 5 plus mile stretch of water with rapids ranging from class III to IV. All rafting equipment is provided. Please bring secure shoes (no flip flops), lunch and extra money for souvenirs or dinner on the ride home.

The Lost Kidz app is free to download on iTunes. It costs an additional .99 cents per year to register your child and should you need to do so, send alerts. All Lost Kidz users receive the alerts for free, regardless of whether or not they register a child on the app.

"If 50 million people can connect to an app which allows people to 'draw something,' what would happen if we all banded together behind an App that could save lives?," he tells Mashable in an email. "Who wouldn't be motivated by that as a challenge? I was inspired by this vision. And the amazing reaction from everyone we have shared that vision with along the way was even more motivation to bring this to fruition. We want this to be on the smartphones of every parent and caregiver on the planet. It's a huge challenge: but one worth fighting for."

Fern was able to get funding from his brothers and the American Humane Association, according to Pando Daily.

The Amber Alert system also recently released an app for Android, with plans for an iOS one in the near future. The app has GPS technology, AT&T connectivity and is also integrated the National Sex Offender database. ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A group of Kansas State University researchers has made valuable findings in the search for cancer's cure.

While researching ways to improve animal health, the scientists -- Raymond "Bob" Rowland, a virologist and professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology, and Deryl Troyer, professor of anatomy and physiology -- have made two important discoveries that can also improve human health. Not only have they found pigs with severe combined immunodeficiency, or SCID, but they are also the first to discover the connection with human cancer, particularly melanomas and pancreatic cancers.

The researchers call it a scientific achievement with huge potential to improve surgeries and drug development involved with cancer.

"This could be a game-changer," Troyer said.

It began with Rowland's research with controlling and eliminating porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, or PRRS. The work led to a fortuitous discovery: a naturally occurring line of immunodeficient pigs.

"Pigs are closely related to humans anatomically and physiologically," Rowland said. "This can have huge potential for human cancer research."

After the discovery of SCID pigs, Rowland turned to Troyer, who performs cancer research. Their collaborative work not only enables researchers to better study SCID pigs, but they can also apply their research to the study of human cancer and anti-cancer drugs.

"This is a great example of collaborative and interdisciplinary research," Troyer said. "With two perspectives, there is often a synergy that evolves because of different ways of thinking."

The researchers have already studied human melanomas and human pancreatic cancers, which are devastating types of cancer and a big target in cancer research, Troyer said. They want to apply the same methods to other types of solid cancers and blood neoplasms like leukemia.

While similar research has been performed with SCID mice, it has not adapted well to human cancer research. Rowland said there is about a 90 percent failure rate in translation of results from mice to humans. Research involving SCID pigs may be more beneficial to human cancer research because pigs are closer anatomically to humans.

The research opens a variety of doors for both animal and human health research. It may now be easier for scientists to improve strategies for bone marrow transplants. They also have a better way to detect cancer drug side effects and test surgical interventions, Troyer said.

"The potential is a little daunting because it is as if there is no horizon limiting possible ways to utilize this model, " Troyer said. "It is an opportunity for Kansas State University to be a leader in the field and to become a center for large animal biomedical research."

For Rowland, the discovery also opens new doors for infectious disease research.

"There are a lot of pig diseases for which we still don't know how they function and how they cause disease," Rowland said. "Now we are able to ask the question, 'What role does the immune system play in clearing the virus or in causing disease?'"

The research also improves the study of zoonotic diseases, which are diseases -- like swine influenza -- that can be transmitted between animals and humans. By developing vaccines for diseases in SCID pigs, scientists can gain insight into human vaccine development. The university's Biosecurity Research Institute provides the ideal location for developing these vaccines, Rowland said.

The scientists have performed research on a small scale and now want to build it up to a larger scale. They see possibilities for new research with the Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center as well as cancer research partnerships and collaborations with the University of Kansas Cancer Center, especially with its recent National Cancer Institute designation.

"Agriculture benefits the people of the state in so many ways," Rowland said. "While it includes jobs and exports, there is a human element that we sometimes forget. This is a good example of how we can take animal health research and all of a sudden it has the potential to help cure human cancer."

The research recently appeared in the journal BioResearch Open Access. Rowland and Troyer have another upcoming publication in the Journal of Veterinary Pathology.

The rumor was started at 9:59 a.m. Eastern on Monday by a Twitter account that claimed to be of a Russian government official. That news, as well as the two follow-up tweets that supposedly confirmed the death, spread like wildfire over Twitter. In the 10 o'clock hour, the price of a gallon of crude oil jumped from $90.82 to $91.99. The price came down again as news that the rumor was false began to spread across market trading floors.

Commodities markets are frequently impacted by rumors, though this is one of the first times that social media has affected the price of crude so directly. "A well-placed story can move the market, and that looks like what happened," explained Phil Flynn, an analyst with Price Futures Group, to The Wall Street Journal.

Cardinal suing Obama invites him, Romney to dinner

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan is suing the Obama administration, but he's inviting President Barack Obama to dinner anyway.

Dolan has asked both Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to attend the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation charity dinner on Oct. 18, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York said Tuesday.

Romney has accepted. The Obama campaign hasn't said publicly whether the president will attend, but Dolan's spokesman, Joseph Zwilling, said Obama has accepted, too.

The Archdiocese of New York is among more than 40 Catholic organizations, charities and schools that are suing over Obama's mandate that employers provide health insurance that covers birth control. Evangelical, Jewish and other religious leaders have joined U.S. bishops in pressing for a broader religious exemption, including for faith-affiliated hospitals, colleges and social service groups.

As the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Dolan has said the White House policy is "strangling" the church. Obama has offered an accommodation, but Catholic leaders and others have said the changes don't go far enough.

The Smith dinner, in its 67th year, is a white-tie event at the Waldorf-Astoria that is customarily attended by presidents and candidates in an election year. Among the speakers have been John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. In 2008, Obama and Republican presidential nominee John McCain attended. The speeches are mostly self-deprecating and lighthearted, and the donations go to needy children.

Despite his differences with Obama, Dolan held to the tradition of inviting the president because "this is not a partisan event," Zwilling said. "It is an evening to put politics aside and come together in a spirit of civility."
